JTC Healthy Weight Loss Program

Obesity is an epidemic in Canada.  According to the National Health Survey conducted in 2001, 1 in 6 Canadians are obese.  This is quite alarming as obesity has been correlated to a decrease in life expectancy by at least 5 years.  Even children between the ages of 7 and 13 have fallen victim to the obesity plague with 1 in every 7 children are considered obese.   How do we fight this ever growing epidemic?   We are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of resources with which we can use to lose weight but do they really work?   These include various fad diets that are supposedly delicious and satisfying, supplements that promise to help with rapid weight loss, DVD work-out programs that asks for very little time commitment etc.

All of the above focuses on “quick” and “easy” weight loss.  Meanwhile, the importance of health is neglected, and whether or not one is able to keep off excessive weight after the program is completed, is not discussed. This is simply because there is, unfortunately no short-cut to healthy weight loss. When you gain 20 pounds because of poor lifestyle choices you did not gain it all in just a few weeks, so it is unrealistic and certainly unhealthy to lose it all over such a short period of time.

At Journey To Cure, patient education is an essential part of our care, because we understand the importance of helping our patients to take control of their health.  We help our patients to reach their weight-loss goal via a very proactive approach, so that each and every one of them will be able to maintain their weight-loss thereby achieving optimal health and an increase life expectancy.
